Paleo is so primally...sexy.

Quitting grains is not just Paleo -- it's the quickest way to a quality life!

What's the Paleo prescription?


Rx: Movement/play/slumber
Rx: Whole veggies, seafood/meat, good fats, seeds/nuts, minimal fruit; feed-feed/fast
Rx: Ancestral vitamin D and EPA DHA levels (Calcidiol [25(OH)D]=70 ng/ml; cod/fish oil to optimization of brain, 5 senses, muscle/heart function)



ONCE people stop grains (primarily wheat) they notice many changes and improvements. To say they undergo a restorative transformation is an understatement. Studies like the FUNGENUT show that wheat and high carb foods like white potatoes trigger a state of chaos and stressful derangements in our bodies (high insulin, high MMPs, high gene expression of 'death' genes).

The promotion of whole grains in the U.S. for 'wholesome' health is simply ridiculously whole cr**p (I'll try to keep it G-rated today *wink*).

Here is what happens when people stop those 'd*mn dirty grains'...Degree of improvement depends on degree of compliance with cessation of wheat... 6-12 months for perceptible permutations. Patience and persistence pays...


ONCE people stop grains...they're IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) eternally ends (essentially, cured of cramping/bloating/constipation) unless re-challenged

ONCE people stop grains...they report their aching knees stop knocking

ONCE people stop grains...their skin glows and radiates...no ACNE

ONCE people stop grains...I notice their waistline starts to emerge...how SEXY...many other things... uummm emerge too

ONCE people stop grains...WEIGHT LOSS BECOMES SUPERFLUOUS...easily attained 10 lbs per month

ONCE people stop grains...I notice their thoughts become thoughtful..lucid again

ONCE people stop grains...they can stop 200 units of insulin and/or other diabetes medications and/or their hypertensive medications and/or their gout medications

ONCE people stop grains...all report their skin tags fall off or stop appearing

Love this post. Educational AND it had me laughing out loud.

I've noticed nothing but good things from grain cessation. In the past, I've had a bit of a chronic cough (that didn't have anything to do with being sick with a cold or anything), but since stopping the grains, that has gone away completely. I also had a lot of mucous after eating grains-- particularly wheat. Why do you suppose that is? I know several people who have reported the same things. No more coughing or mucous. What is it in wheat that creates mucous/chronic coughing?

Those improvements are so AWESOME! That's nice to notice great results with something so simple.

Stephan recently reviewed how asthma (an allergic condition with origins similar to allergic rhinitis like weed/mold allergies) after grains were introduced to a small migrant society.

Personally my theory is that grains, dairy and, unprocessed legumes cause our innate immune system to get highly sensitived and easily triggered. This 'nonspecific' immunity has no boundaries or leadership. We make mucous and promote drainage in our sinuses and lungs to try to eliminate the allergens (mold, pollen, dust, mite poop, dander, etc). Lectins bind supposed 'invaders' like the above (PLUS bacteria/viruses/fungi) and are found in legumes, grains, fruit (cranberry juice is a good example).

We produce our own as well like MBL (mannose binding lectins) -- perhaps excessively with wheat... fruit... HFCS...??

I wish other immunology experts would jump in! :) I'm such an idiot.

After wheat cessation (with some fish oil and maybe vitamin D), perhaps lectin and other immune factor concentrations drop and everything starts to calm down.

Aha! The lectin connection makes sense, and sent me off searching for a little more info in that arena. Here's an interesting little tidbit from a Dr. David L. J. Freed, MB, MD, MIBiol (http://www.adhoc-web.co.uk/SAC/sc-lectingroup.html):

"I persuaded my department to buy a quantity of concanavalin A (conA), the lectin of common jackbeans. Apparently jackbeans are used as animal fodder in America and sometimes for humans, and I knew I had never eaten them (so any response would be uncoloured by any pre-existing immune response). Cautiously, I sniffed a little of the lectin up my right nostril, using the left as control, and to my pained gratification I experienced an indolent rhinitis beginning about an hour later and peaking at about six hours, with pain and discomfort in the rhinopharynx and blood-stained mucous efflux. Just like the initial phase of a cold when you feel ill and feverish but there’s no sneezing. Fascinated, I repeated the experiment monthly, getting rhinitis each time. But after about six doses the reaction became faster, coming on within minutes instead of hours and waning after an hour, and now with violent sneezing and copious clear (not blood-stained) mucus. Just like the mite-allergic rhinitis I remembered from 15 years previously, and just like the second phase of a cold when you start feeling a bit better but sound a lot worse, with sneezing and blocked runny nose. Emboldened, I tried inhaling 10mg of conA into my lungs using an Intal insufflator, and made myself very ill for 24 hours with high fever, prostration and dry cough. I didn’t have the wit to put a stethoscope to my chest or organise an X-ray, but it felt just like the bronchopneumonia I had once caught a few years previously. I wanted to try the experiment again but my wife forbade it!"

Rhinitis, mucous, coughing... It's all very familiar. He notes that wheat tops the list as far as the commercially-available lectins go, which explains a lot of the widespread food intolerances. Makes sense.

Yes, Gluten Grains and lectins that bind the gut tissue, such as Wheat, rye and barley lectins, legume lectins (including peanut) and tomato lectin are suspected of being involved in auto-immune diseases, through multiple mechanisms.

Unfortunately, there aren't many scientific papers on the subject. In fact, the only two scientists that I know of who have researched this are Dr. David Freed and Dr. Loren Cordain.

Here are two great papers (albeit old) from Cordain that have helped me design a Special Diet for myself (mainly paleo without milk, grains, legumes, tomato and egg whites + Vitamin D + Omega 3) and my RA got into remission:

I am impressed with your progress! That is wonderful. I hope others realize that many conditions are actually reversible with Paleo and appropriate optimization/correction of antioxidant and nutritional status.

Have you considered additionally the value of Krill oil/Astaxanthin for joint inflammation and strengthened immunity? I have patients who take it and notice complete resolution of joint aches (hands/knees; the back is more difficult) within 2 wks usually. It is really super stuff.

I'm admittedly naive when it comes to krill oil. I see people like Mercola promoting it all the time, but I never jumped on that wagon because I don't know what the benefit of krill is over regular fish oil. The EPA and DHA are a lot lower in krill oil, so you'd have to take bunches more of the stuff to get the same amount-- which is not something I want to do because krill is more expensive than fish oil. This is why I've never taken it.

But then krill supposedly has antioxidant properties that fish oil doesn't have.

So the question is: For things like that described by JMC (auto-immune, RA, etc.), what gives krill oil that advantage over fish oil? Would fish oil + astaxanthin accomplish a similar result?

My mom has a ton of joint pain (bursitis in the shoulder that just won't go away), and if it's possible, I'd rather her take a $15 bottle of fish oil + a $10 bottle of astaxanthin than a $40 bottle of krill oil + a $15 bottle of fish oil + a $10 bottle of astaxanthin. But maybe all are necessary. I just don't know. *shrugs*

I've wondered too... Right now there is only one distributor for krill oil. It's like OPEC. However, I've heard that a second player soon will be entering the market on this monopoly. *ha* Hopefully prices will go down.

Perhaps the synergism of the phospholipids + EPA/DHA + Astaxanthin improves krill oil's benefits, but I don't know for sure from what I've read or observed.

Potent carotenoids are found in meat and seafood (and bioengineered algae, etc).

Here are a couple of studies which demonstrate that Astaxanthin alone has potent mitochondrial and ROS antioxidant abilities and can raise HDLs in animals as well as one human trial. :) I've tried both -- but haven't done lab testing so unfortunately I review any n=1 data yet. Let me know how it works for your mom!

I think marine-based fatty acids will continue to be recognized as ultimately healthy -- as long as they are not contaminated with PCBs, heavy metals, etc.

MegaRed Omega Krill Oil @ Costco, $18.99, 90 300 mg softgels, 90 mg omega 3 fatty acids, 45 mg EPA, 27 mg DHA.

Late summer/early fall 2008 and then in January 09 Costco had a nice coupon (no limits) for $3 or 4 off. Distrib by Schiff, made with NKO )Neptune Krill Oil).

Costco has the best price I have seen on NKO. The exp date is mid-2010. I stocked up with the recent $4 coupon.

Those are good -- but still ~$20 per month is a little STEEP.

With krill and astaxanthin -- the benefits are 'durable' as Doc Davis often brings up.

meaning...once we reduce the dose (or even stop) the benefits remain.

Vitacost sells an NSI krill oil product called KriaXanthin. It's not NKO (Cyvex), but I wonder if it's any good? EPA and DHA are lower than NKO, but I wonder if the phospholipids are the same? If so, then who cares about the EPA/DHA (which is low in NKO anyway) as long as you're taking enough fish oil simultaneously. Maybe that's too simplistic, but if the KriaXanthin is good stuff, it'd be less expensive, at least by a little bit (300 softgels, 500 mg per capsule-- $40).
