The Gut Guardians Inaugural Podcast: Episode 01 – Intro to Grace and Matt
Partnering with Mr. Matt Pepin, of RestoreTheFlora.com fame, we are launching a podcast fully focused on gut health and the microbes that make the gut its home. In the first episode we talk about why we love the gut and its importance not only in our lives, but for the future of medicine. There was even talk of the power of float tanks and zen states.
There were some technical difficulties due to Matt's old 2008 laptop. The static issue will only be present in the first two episodes.

The Brain and Adrenal Health

Note the proximity of adrenals to our major blood highways, the aorta and the vena cava which feed from the BRAIN and the heart which pumps and circulates 5 liters of your blood every second.

Instantly in less than one minute, chemical messengers that are integrated from the brain and its structures -- hypothalamus and the pituitary -- as a response to environmental and internal cues elicit changes immediately in the adrenals glands.
What Do the Adrenals Control?
The adrenals produce ~50 hormones (98% cholesterol-derived): all the sex hormones and their intermediaries, adrenaline (NE, EPI), aldosterone and cortisol. We need cortisol like we need insulin. Type 1 diabetes individuals make no insulin as a result of autoimmune damage and insults at the pancreatic islet cell level; to survive insulin must be injected or I.V. basal dosing all day at low levels. Insulin is necessary to make muscles and fat but not mandatory for fuel utilization. On the other hand, cortisol is necessary to integrate all food -- carbs, proteins and fats -- as well as to burn and produce energy -- ketones, glycogen, gluconeogenesis (GNG), and fatty acids. Cortisol may be the master hormone because it may control insulin and leptin, not the other way around. And... the BRAIN controls cortisol.
Natural Cortisol Secretion Patterns
Cortisol secretion follows a circadian pattern under normal relaxed circumstances. Generally, cortisol blood levels are highest in the morning as we are getting up and ready for the day. Shifting from a comatose, restful sleep tone to an alert, reposed, wakeful tone requires all the products from the adrenal glands, as directed by the brain (pineal gland downshifts melatonin, our internal 'clock' and 'calendar for seasons', light hits past the eyelids to crank out chemical messengers from the hypothalamus and pituitary to turn us 'on' for the day).
Spikes occur with 3 types of stimuli:
1) to produce energy from fats, protein, glycogen/glucose/GNG -- for waking, lower blood glucose, starvation/fasting, exercise training
2) to store energy -- post meal storage
3) to react to stimulation to maintain blood pressure and suppress inflammation -- caffeine, environmental cues (scent, sight, hearing, touch), mental stress, physical stress, sleep deprivation, nutritional deprivation
Cortisol Pathologies
Chronic 'spiking' may be pathologic if all the above are present or stimulus from an autoimmune or hyperplasia of growth at the hypothalamic, pituitary or adrenal cellular level (pheochromocytoma, Cushing's disease, hyperadrenocorticism).
Over time, alternatively, production can be halted, staggered or even chronically depleted.
Adrenal Insufficiency in the 21st Century
If there is one condition that may characterize neolithic living in our hyper-informed, hyperaware, super active, 'go-go-go', multi-tasking, 24/7 plugged-in age, adrenal insufficiency is IT. Btw, don't bother asking your conventionally trained physician about this condition. Currently, as far as I am aware, adrenal insufficiency just as vitamin D insufficiency and gluten/wheat-intolerance is not a part of the med school curriculum. Current M.D.s' are not trained to identify, diagnosis or treat this 'subclinical' condition unless you are about to keel over and display non-existent, undetectable serum levels of cortisol. Addison's is at the extreme end of the adrenal insufficiency 'spectrum' and is considered life-threatening, leading to complete shut down of organs if untreated. Like diabetes and celiac sprue, it's all a SPECTRUM which we may all be on... somewhere. Pre-diabetes? Silent-celiac? Show me someone who is not...

I've tried to look into the multivaried causes of adrenal insufficiency. They are the same as other organ and subsequent hormone failures (thyroid, kidney, coronary vasculature, brain/migraines, brain/Parkinson's, ovaries/PCOS, testicles/T-deficiency, etc) and insufficiency spectrums.

Adrenal Recovery
Inducing the adrenals to perform and function the way that we are meant to evolutionarily involves a multi-tiered program geared at feeding and recovering the adrenals. I am no expert but I am getting through recovering. Part of how my thyroids and adrenals pooped out can probably be traced back to childhood and even the in utero environment. Children can be born with adrenals working subpar (like many autism and spectrum children/adults). The factors for me: mother with IBS (gluten intolerance) and probably vitamin D/EPA+DHA deficiency, childhood 3rd degree burn involving majority of L-thigh (comatose for a few days), mother's death during childhood, asthma, bronchitis, infections, decades of gluten/n-6/candy toxicity, college and other stressors, finally use of synthetic birth control hormones, C-section surgery, 4 years straight not sleeping (pregnancy/lactation), our cat falling unrecoverably ill and passing away, stopping yoga and exercising less last year, caffeine dependency, progesterone-excess and extreme endocrine disruption from Mirena hormone IUD, 18-24 month lowgrade dental inflammation/abscess, and a bike accident (proverbial last straw).
One the best resources I have found is Dr. J. Wilson PhD ND's book 'Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome'. So far I agree with everything except the use of omega-6 (he advises a Tbs of sunflower oil daily) and whole grains, though he addresses gluten sensitivity. Achieving success in an evolutionary fashion would be far superior I believe and prevent further taxing of the adrenal organs. Otherwise, Dr. Wilson's recovery plan appears complete, thorough and borne out of deep 20+ years of research and experience. He covers medical data and research from 100 years ago combined with current medical publications but has written the book for the layperson. Part IV reviews the anatomy and physiology excellently and explains very well role of adrenals and the pathophysiology of damage.
The recovery program is multi-tiered:
(a) Pro-active relaxation and 'programmed' laughing (seriously, LAUGH LAUGH GIGGLE)
(b) SLEEP and nap
(c) Address nutritional deficiencies which occurred in the course of burning out the adrenals or from incomplete diets (iodine and mineral deficiencies are in fact very common as shown in the medical literature)
(d) Routine regular eating combining small amounts of carbs at each meal with plenty of fats and protein, including starting the day off w/good breakfasts; often people with low adrenals have low hunger in the morning (few in the morning however, and no fruit for most secondary to hyperglycemic effects)
(e) Routine regular deep breathing: exercise, yoga, meditation, massage, stretching (more sex)
(f) Avoiding as much of the above listed 'causes' because they are all adrenal depletors
Adjusting our internal cues is the key. I have observed in my hypertension and diabetes patients incredible blood pressure lowering and even glucose lowering with simple 5 minute breathing relaxation exercises in the clinic.
We indeed have extreme control of mind and therefore body. Tap into the mental inner core. (In yoga they say 'the breath is the bridge between the body and the mind')
Easy? Incredibly so. Once one is not in denial *haa!*
Part of the recovery plan, I'll be on vacation for several weeks in Beijing and Shanghai. YIPPEE! More to follow (or not *hee*).

'Breathe, Not Botox'
I finally returned to yoga after a little 'sabbatical' (eg, holiday cheer, parties) and this fantastic teacher gave us incredible instructions (lotta newbies in class as it's still Jan). . . 'Breathe, not botox' for radiant, glowing skin and staying young. HAA aahhaa that's a new one for me!Well, apparently she's totally R-I-G-H-T ON. Several new beauty products on the market contain neuropeptides (again pricey $$$ Perricone and Kinerase C8) claim to increase skin collagen and prevent/reduce wrinkles and 'AGE CONTROL'. HHHhhhMMMmmm... really...?
She explained that during spinal twists and deep breathing, our spinal fluid (CSF) is manipulated and gently encouraged to circulate more freely...releasing longevity-promoting substances. Wow. Neurobiology in yoga. She remarked that yogi's are known to have youthful looking skin and this is why. (It's true...have you seen Rodney Yee, the master? He doesn't look a day over 17.)

Mammalian Neuropeptide Y (NPY)
Recently, I posted about neuropeptides generated in our nervous tissue like the brain and nervous tissue, as they relate to melatonin and pheromones. CSF bathes our brain and spine (have you heard of 'spinal taps'? not the music... ) and moves all along our spine and through the ventricles of the brain. Neuropeptides work through even our sweat glands and muscles (yeah, wrinkle producing ones) in our skin because our nervous system is like a super duper octupus which has far-reaching tentacles that innervate EVERYTHING. Scientists have found high concentrations of neuropeptides in healing tissue after trauma, burns and inflammatory conditions (psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis). Centenarians in Poland have higher concentrations of NPY (neuropeptide Y) in their blood compared to younger folks, elderly (below age 70) and obese individuals. Animals experience many relaxing effects when they were injected with NPY into the brain: lower heart rate, improved energy regulation, enhanced the feeding-induced insulin response, less adrenaline (norepi), and improved parasympathetic responses (eg, calming restorative effects that occur typically when we're feeding or sleeping). Can't find skin radiating and anti-wrinkle benefits for NPY...but I betcha they exist *haHAA*

How is NYP Increased?
Yoga -- which is the equivalent of pro-active R&R. (Interestingly, the below researchers did not find NYP overflow from the brain which I don't know if that is related to tight junctures at the blood-brain-barrier preventing it from leaving the brain confines?) Scientists measured concentrations of NYP and found that at rest human subjects produced the greatest amounts during rest and about 25% as much during exercise.
Region-Specific Neuropeptide Y Overflows at Rest and During Sympathetic Activation in Humans
"The net overflow of neuropeptide Y to plasma observed at rest across the hepatic circulation, but not the cardiac, forearm, or cerebral circulations, indicates that the gut, the liver, or both make a major contribution to systemic plasma neuropeptide Y levels in humans. Sympathetic activation by exercise produced a modest increase in cardiac neuropeptide Y overflow but to only approximately 25% of the resting input from the gut and without a change in arterial neuropeptide Y concentration."
Regress...To Progress??
As new technology emerges to fast track our health and looks, I can't help but be stunned by the simple realization that we can achieve the same exact things by just getting back to the basics (Paleo): twist and play, dance, yoga, meditate, sleep well, and rest/relax.

BACKGROUND: Sudarshana Kriya Yoga (SKY) has demonstrable antidepressant effects. SKY was tested for this effect in inpatients of alcohol dependence.
METHODS: Following a week of detoxification management consenting subjects (n=60) were equally randomized to receive SKY therapy or not (controls) for a two-week study.
CONCLUSION: Results extend the antidepressant effects of SKY in alcohol dependence subjects. Reduction in stress-hormone levels (cortisol and ACTH) along with BDI reductions possibly support a biological mechanism of SKY in producing beneficial effects.

Is mind control more important than physical control?
In racing when split-second decisions and actions decide life and death, mind control seems to often predict the winners and the losers.
The Wall Street had a recent interview ('Speed Secrets...') on racing prodigy Lewis Hamilton who finished top three in his first nine Formula One races last season and narrowly missed his first championship win.
"The willingness to stay off the brake appears to come from Mr. Hamilton's preparation. Dating to his time in racing's developmental levels, he has worked with Kerry Spackman, a neuroscientist employed by McLaren, Mr. Hamilton's team. Dr. Spackman tries to help drivers improve decision-making by getting them to feel a greater sense of calm. This was fruitful in last season's Japanese Grand Prix, which was soaked by rain on race day. While several other top drivers crashed out -- the rookie won the race with ease. Mr. Hamilton also has compensated for his lack of experience with his extensive use of McLaren's race simulator. The device, similar to those used by pilots for training, can simulate everything from g-forces to weather to bumps in the road. This season, observers say he may benefit from a rules change outlawing traction control, which should put more emphasis on driver skill."
A clear calm mind may relate to less stressors, less detractors, and more physical control. Other than hiring a neuroscientist, how can a calm mind be created? For one, simply getting enough rest and relaxation. On a daily basis, striving for reasonable sleep improves many factors related to the mind... as well as matters of the H-E-A-R-T.
Is sleep deprivation yet another CAD risk factor? Perhaps... but so easily MODIFIABLE. Each person is different, so the quality and quantity of sleep may vary but the overall required amount is whatever it takes to fill up the tank, so to speak.

Minimize sleep deficits... and you'll gain maximal amounts of health and immunity (and likely lower Lp(a) if you are sleep deprived).

Effects of chronic sleep deprivation on autonomic activity by examining heart rate variability, plasma catecholamine, and intracellular magnesium levels.
Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with cardiovascular events. In addition, autonomic activity determined from the levels of the heart rate variability (HRV), plasma catecholamine, and intracellular magnesium (Mg) are important in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular events. This study therefore aimed to determine the effects of chronic sleep deprivation on autonomic activity by examining the HRV, plasma catecholamine, and intracellular magnesium levels. Thirty (30) healthy male college students ranging in age from 20 to 24 years of age (average 22 +/- 1 years; mean +/- SD) with no coronary risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia or a family history of premature coronary artery disease (CAD) were included in the study. Over a 4-week period, the volunteers' plasma levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and erythrocyte-Mg were measured. The study was made during the 4 weeks before and immediately after college finals exams. HRV, obtained from 24-hour ambulatory ECG monitoring, included time and frequency domain indices. The HRV indices and erythrocyte-Mg decreased while norepinephrine increased during chronic sleep deprivation. It is concluded that chronic sleep deprivation causes an autonomic imbalance and decreases intracellular Mg, which could be associated with chronic sleep deprivation-induced cardiovascular events.

Be An Inhaler
How often do you hold your breath?
Do you ever feel tightness in your neck?
What level of stress affects you?
How much vitamin 'O' do take? (Optimism that Dr. Davis speaks of)
I confess I'm a gym-rat. And yoga's my Vitamin 'O'. It's an essential vitamin.
Since the new year started off with bright shiny resolutions, the gym has been understandably packed.
So packed... there is no parking....
But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. And right now... that path is paved with a bunch of ya-hoos clogging my favorite yoga class :)
Hopefully not for long though.
I'm optimistic. *chuckle*
It's definitely a different experience. Being hip to hip with strangers. Hearing their groans (and whimpers) as our instructor teaches us how to self-torture, self-massage, and self-relax ourselves. Why am I into deep breathing?
How does that enhance pharmacology?
In class it's hard to miss deep audible breathing... in unison...the whole class.... Is it sexy? Being back to back?
Highly suggestive of... tantric... cool... Sting...
The class is almost semi-advanced and lead by our shaved-head yoga-stud. It's not a fancy-shmancy class... just gymrat-yoga. What the class is not: bikram, strict/hatha, iyengar, naked yoga (in case you're wondering(!!) sorry to disappoint).
Special names he gives poses:
- Airplane (stand on one leg, arms out, other leg horizontal out)
- Dog
- Fire hydrant (imagine above, one knee lifted, get it?)
- Dead bug (on back, grabbing toe; this is actually known as 'happy baby' and he says there's a reason why this isn't called the 'happy grandma' pose -- funny guy -- and all the grandmas in our class laugh when he says this)
Isn't that involuntary?!

Occasionally he'll put these zigger-platitudes out:
---he hears complaints all the time people are 'soooo tired'
---then he hears complaints (from the same individuals) they 'can't fall asleep' (??!! he never gets it)
---he often wonders... 'why do they keep coming up with new gadgets that are supposed to make our lives easier? when truly the latest gadget always makes our lives more miserable than the previous gadget.'
Class is too hilarious and any position becomes difficult to breathe and hold when you're trying not to laugh.

Deep breathing during yoga, exercise training and relaxation techniques opens the lowest lobes of the lungs which subsequently activate vagal pathways to the brain. The vagal nerve is responsibility for parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) activities which are related to restoration, rejuvenation and relaxation in the body. These functions are crucial, vital and potent for reduction in systemic inflammation, heart rhythm stabilization and maintenance of a strong immune system. Activation of the PSNS (or autonomic nervous system) via deep breathing is significantly associated with decreasesin heart rate irregularity, less harmful heart remodeling, and reduction of anxiety and stress.
Deep breathing is a plaque-buster indeed.
Anything that strengthens the immune system probably also reduces Lp(a), an acute phase reactant of the immune system, which is one of the most challenging heart risk factors we deal with at Track Your Plaque. Yoga feels great, in fact, sometimes it's better than s..e..x.., omg did I just say that? Yes, it's true, n-o-t . . . e-v-e-r-y-d-a-y, but the endorphins released are frequently quite fantastic. Endorphins are natural opioids we make in our own bodies which reduce stress, elevate mood and alleviate tension.
That is the pharmacology that I'm referring too...
